Dear Campus Colleagues,
As I shared in a December 2025 message to campus, a change to a New York City regulation affecting short-term rentals resulted in a thorough review of App State’s New York Loft reservation policies.
The Loft is a unique asset and a cornerstone of transformative educational experiences at App State, and we were hopeful that the review would allow the university to continue using the Loft for academic student trips.
Unfortunately, based on the review and legal guidance, it was determined that short-term reservations of less than 30 days are not permitted at this property.
Therefore, to comply with local laws, the university has temporarily paused the use of the Loft while leadership actively reviews and considers all potential options for the property.
A final decision regarding the long-term future of the property has not been made. Currently, we are navigating immediate legal constraints.
We deeply regret any disruption this causes to academic travel plans. While group leaders will need to secure alternative accommodations for New York City trips moving forward, please know that academic travel to the city itself is still permitted and supported.
