Christine Ogilvie Hendren, PhD is Vice Provost for Research and Innovation and a Professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences. She previously held the role of Director of the Research Institute for Environment, Energy, & Economics. Prior to coming to Appalachian State in 2020, Dr. Hendren served as engineering research faculty and Executive Director of a research center at Duke University.
In her role as Vice Provost Dr. Hendren serves as the Chief Research Officer, leading the research enterprise through oversight of campus-wide entities that enable and manage research, and working across colleges and with internal and external partners to foster and support research, scholarship, creative activities, and pathways to innovation throughout App State. With a background in environmental engineering, risk assessment, and the integration of knowledge across various disciplines, her specific research expertise is in building transdisciplinary research capacity in multi-sector teams to address complex global sustainability challenges; she serves as co-PI or PI of several grants in these areas of convergence research.
Dr. Hendren holds a B.S. in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University, a professional master's degree in environmental analysis and decision making from Rice University and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Duke University. She founded and co-chairs INTEREACH (Interdisciplinary Integration Research Careers Hub), a community of practice for research professionals whose expertise is integrating across boundaries.
