Dear Faculty,
We are pleased to share new App State Fulbright Fellowship Support Guidelines.
These guidelines:
- are designed to provide a clear and consistent pathway for faculty seeking to pursue Fulbright Fellowships;
- were developed to support faculty applicants while ensuring departments and colleges can plan accordingly; and
- align with Faculty Handbook policies (Sections 5.1 and 5.3) and Academic Affairs Standard Operating Procedures (AASOPs) regarding Reassigned Time Leave (RTL).
Requests will be reviewed at the department and college levels before final approval is granted by the Provost.
Intent to Apply Process
To initiate the application process, eligible faculty must first submit an Application for Institutional Fellowship Support via InfoReady.
- The deadline for submission is one year before the anticipated fellowship start date. Faculty may wish to begin this process earlier to assess the timing and feasibility of their application.
- This process ensures necessary pre-approvals from the Department Chair and Dean, as well as a feasibility review for course coverage.
- This is separate from the Fulbright Fellowship application, and faculty should secure institutional pre-approval before submitting a Fulbright application.
Eligibility
- Eligible faculty will typically be tenured.
- In exceptional cases, Special Faculty with significant research, scholarship and creative activities may be considered, provided their teaching loads allow.
Application Requirements
The application process requires the following:
- Name
- Department
- Fulbright program URL
- Anticipated leave period(s)
- Chair and Dean approval
Leave Management
Approved faculty will receive one semester of Special Leave, granted by the Provost, which includes full pay and benefits.
- This leave is separate from RTL and does not impact future RTL eligibility.
Faculty wishing to extend their leave to a full year have two options (pending Chair and Dean approval):
- Use RTL — If the fellowship timing aligns with the RTL cycle, faculty may apply for a semester of RTL by following the standard RTL approval process.
- Take Unpaid Leave — Faculty may take an unpaid semester, with the understanding that benefits will be impacted.
Financial Management
Fulbright Fellowship applicants must apply independently of the university and serve as the direct recipient and manager of awarded funds. All tax and financial management responsibilities must be handled outside the university.
