29th Annual Walk for Awareness

Date:
Tuesday, September 4, 2018 - 9:00pm
Location:
Begins at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts
Description:

The Walk for Awareness is a silent walk through campus to commemorate lives lost to violence in our community, to support victims and survivors of violence and to affirm our commitment and responsibility to speak out against violence in all its forms.

After remarks from J.J. Brown, vice chancellor of student affairs, and other campus leadership, participants will leave the Schaefer Center and walk silently to Sanford Mall. At Sanford Mall there will be music, a presentation by speaker Dr. Martha McCaughey and closing remarks by Dr. April Baer to send participants out with the charge that they all actively engage in creating a violence-free community.

The history of the Walk for Awareness has similar threads to this year's common read, “The Laramie Project.” Both were small college communities that experienced loss through acts of violence and had to overcome adversity.
