Studio Art (BFA)

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. Students will achieve technical competence.

  • 1.1 Students will achieve a high-level mastery of materials and methods in one or more media of the visual arts.
  • 1.2 Students will apply a working knowledge of fundamental design and composition skills.
  • 1.3 Students will demonstrate a high-level mastery of the tools and technologies in one or more media of the visual arts.
  • 1.4 Students will discover the process involved in mastering new materials or techniques.
  • 1.5 Students will utilize safe working habits in all aspects of studio practice.

2. Students will be prepared to work as entry-level art professionals.

  • 2.1 Students will distinguish professional work habits, including documentation, dissemination and research for further support of work.
  • 2.2 Students will examine the work and ideas of artists, craftspeople, designers and other art professionals.
  • 2.3 Students will exhibit fully-resolved artwork in a professional environment.
  • 2.4 Students will prepare effective and professional verbal presentations of personal artwork.
  • 2.5 Students will research professional opportunities at a variety of public and private institutions.
  • 2.6 Students will take personal responsibility for productively working in communal, collaborative environments that foster respect and support.

3. Students will develop a contextual understanding of art.

  • 3.1 Students will appraise the cultural significance of art in a diverse, global society with an understanding of historical, cultural and stylistic contexts.

4. Students will develop critical thinking skills.

  • 4.1 Students will analyze their own and others work through valid assessments of quality in art and design.
  • 4.2 Students will assess the relationship between media, visual qualities and content.
  • 4.3 Students will employ critical and reflective thinking through oral and written communication.
  • 4.4 Students will identify, formulate, analyze and solve visual problems.

5. Students will form personal artistic visions.

  • 5.1 Students will create a cohesive body of work that demonstrates specific intent, personal insight, and individualized visual vocabulary.
  • 5.2 Students will discover personal growth and self-motivation by identifying, developing and realizing individual objectives.
  • 5.3 Students will express personal, original ideas through appropriate media.
  • 5.4 Students will investigate conceptual development as an inherent part of their work, while recognizing and citing relevant references.
