Music Education (BM)

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. The student will synthesize and apply knowledge of music education pedagogy.

  • 1.1 The student will apply analytical knowledge in written and demonstrated lesson plans.
  • 1.2 The student will apply historical knowledge in written and demonstrated lesson plans.
  • 1.3 The student will apply classroom management strategies appropriate to student teaching classrooms.
  • 1.4 The student will demonstrate technological competence appropriate for K-12 classroom activities.
  • 1.5 The student will apply appropriate assessment strategies.
  • 1.6 The student will apply knowledge of the needs of all learners in lesson planning for individuals, performing groups, and in classroom situations.
  • 1.7 The student will apply knowledge of the needs of all learners in management strategies for individuals, performing groups, and classroom situations.
  • 1.8 The student will solve pedagogical problems.

2. The student will learn the practical skills and methodologies for successful music instruction.

  • 2.1 The student will demonstrate accurate and expressive conducting skills with various types of performing groups and in general classroom situations.
  • 2.2 The student will demonstrate effective keyboard performance abilities appropriate to the student's teaching specialization.
  • 2.3 The student will demonstrate effective vocal performance abilities appropriate to the student's teaching specialization.
  • 2.4 The student will demonstrate effective instrumental performance abilities appropriate to the student's teaching specialization.

3. The student will apply the dispositions that reflect the attitudes, beliefs, and values needed for successful music instruction.

  • 3.1 The student will demonstrate ethical practices in music education in verbal and non-verbal communications with peers, instructors and in classroom situations.
  • 3.2 The student will demonstrate professional practices in music education in verbal and non-verbal communications with peers, instructors and in classroom situations.
  • 3.3 The student will exhibit reflective practice in music education.
