Interior Design (BS)

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. Interior designers apply historical and cultural knowledge of interiors, architecture, art, and the decorative arts; apply theories of two- and three-dimensional design, and spatial definition; and apply the principles and theories of color and light within the context of determining design solutions.

  • 1.1 Students will apply the theories of two- and three-dimensional design, color, and light to evaluation of design problems and recommendations for design decisions.
  • 1.2 Students will appraise interiors, architecture, art, and decorative arts with cultural sensitivity as they make design decisions.

2. Interior designers select and specify appropriate furniture, fixtures, equipment and finish materials; apply principles of lighting, acoustics, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality; demonstrate knowledge of interior construction and building systems; and apply laws, codes, standards, and guidelines that impact the design of interior spaces.

  • 2.1 Students will evaluate broad samples of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and finishes as they select products for the execution of their design decisions.
  • 2.2 Students will examine laws, codes, and standards, along with Universal and Sustainable Design guidelines, as they formulate design decisions for the built environment.
  • 2.3 Students will integrate knowledge of interior construction, systems and controls as they execute design decisions to enhance the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants.

3. Interior designers will weigh design decisions with consideration of their ecological, socioeconomic, cultural, and human behavioral contexts, as well as of their global implications.

  • 3.1 Students will assess global market factors as they make design decisions within various ecological, socio-economic, cultural, and human behavioral contexts.

4. Interior designers will work both independently and collaboratively to identify and define relevant aspects of a design problem, gather and synthesize appropriate information and research findings (i.e., evidence-based), generate alternative responses to programmatic requirements, and demonstrate creative thinking and originality in solutions.

  • 4.1 Students will professionally and ethically produce design decisions using varieties of verbal, written, and graphic communication strategies within both independent and collaborative frameworks.
  • 4.2 Students will systematically perform all phases of the design process as they synthesize relevant information and research findings to produce creative and original design decisions.
