Environmental Science (BS)

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. To have a functional knowledge of foundational scientific principles related to the environmental sciences.

  • 1.1 Students will develop functional knowledge of mathematics as it pertains to the environmental sciences
  • 1.2 Students will develop functional knowledge of the physical sciences as they pertain to the environmental sciences
  • 1.3 Students will develop functional knowledge of the life sciences as they pertain to the environmental sciences
  • 1.4 Students will identify and apply key scientific principles to accurately analyze contemporary environmental issues

2. To obtain a functional understanding of the methods inherent in the environmental sciences.

  • 2.1 Students will apply quantitative analysis techniques when addressing environmental issues
  • 2.2 Students will acquire, organize, and manage valid scientific data employing accepted discipline specific methods
  • 2.3 Students will acquire a functional understanding of geographic information systems as they pertain to the environmental sciences
  • 2.4 Students will participate in an active learning experience that requires the use of relevant knowlege and accepted methods in the environmental sciences

3. To achieve a minimum level of oral and written communication skills in the environmental sciences.

  • 3.1 Students will prepare and present oral presentations that accurately and impartially disseminate scientific knowledge of a specific environmental issue
  • 3.2 Students will write a manuscript that accurately and impartially disseminates an active learning experience and participate in a peer review process
  • 3.3 Students will write a functional literature review of a contemporary environmental issue
