Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. Students will acquire critical thinking and research skills, including various critical and theoretical approaches to analyzing texts

  • 1.1 Students will conduct scholarly research on literary (or related) topics and will incorporate secondary source material into their written analysis using conventions in the discipline.
  • 1.2 Students will demonstrate proficiency in applying critical and theoretical approaches to analyzing texts
  • 1.3 Students will demonstrate proficiency in close reading skills
  • 1.4 Students will produce thesis-driven essays that demonstrate understanding and analysis of texts.

2. Students will acquire foundational knowledge in the study of literature and language

  • 2.1 Students will acquire foundational knowledge of a variety of authors from different eras, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds who create in a variety of genres.
  • 2.2 Students will conduct scholarly research on literary (or related) topics and will incorporate secondary source material into their written analysis using conventions in the discipline.
  • 2.3 Students will demonstrate proficiency in applying critical and theoretical approaches to analyzing texts
  • 2.4 Students will demonstrate proficiency in close reading skills
