Child Development: Birth through Kindergarten (BS)

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. Students will acquire the content knowledge required to function as a Birth-Kindergarten professional: an understanding of typical and atypical patterns of development, the family and cultural influences influencing that development, and the community resources available to support it.

  • 1.1 Students identify family, cultural, and community influences upon children's development.
  • 1.2 Students identify typical as well as atypical patterns of child development.

2. Students will develop the skills and dispositions required to function effectively as a BK professional: assessing children's development and program effectiveness, creating or adapting environments and curricula, collaborating with families and other professionals.

  • 2.1 Students demonstrate ability to plan and implement an integrated curriculum (including the ability to create or adapt an environment that facilitates execution of the curriculum) in order to facilitate every child's construction of knowledge and provide a foundation for lifelong learning.
  • 2.2 Students use authentic, ongoing assessment of children's abilities in order to create intervention strategies that build upon each child's unique strengths.
