Athletic Training (BS)

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

1. Administration and Professionalism: Athletic training students demonstrate dispositions essential to becoming effective professionals and utilize plans, policies, and procedures to ensure responsive and effective operations.

  • 1.1 Articulate the clinical evaluation findings to the patient and other health care professionals.
  • 1.2 Explain and appraise safety hazards associated with activities, activity areas, and equipment by following accepted procedures and guidelines.

2. Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills: Athletic training students utilize critical thinking and analytical skills to enhance clinical decision making.

  • 2.1 Determine and direct standard immediate care procedures and explain and implement the transfer of care for conditions beyond the scope of practice of the athletic trainer.
  • 2.2 Develop a clinical impression by interpreting the signs, symptoms, and predisposing factors of the injury, illness, or health-related conditions.
  • 2.3 Reassess the status of injuries, illnesses, and/or conditions using standard techniques and documentation strategies to determine appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, reconditioning and/or the need for prophylactic/protective measures; evaluate readiness to return to a desired level of activity.

3. Scientific and Technical Knowledge & Comprehension: Athletic training students know and apply the requisite discipline-specific scientific and technical concepts critical to their development.

  • 3.1 Describe and apply physical conditioning principles by designing and implementing appropriate programs.
  • 3.2 Determine and direct standard immediate care procedures and explain and implement the transfer of care for conditions beyond the scope of practice of the athletic trainer.
  • 3.3 Explain and administer therapeutic modalities and therapeutic and conditioning exercise(s) using standard techniques and procedures.
  • 3.4 Identify, inspect and palpate the involved area(s) using standard techniques to assess the pathology and extent of the injury, illness, or health-related condition.
  • 3.5 Know, apply, and communicate about standard protective equipment and the risks associated with participation and specific activities.
  • 3.6 Know, apply, and communicate standard immediate care procedures.

4. Written and Oral Communication Skills: Athletic training students use effective communication skills to enhance health care delivery.

  • 4.1 Articulate the clinical evaluation findings to the patient and other health care professionals.
  • 4.2 Describe and apply the principles of healthy lifestyle behaviors using effective education, communication, and interventions.
  • 4.3 Know, apply, and communicate about standard protective equipment and the risks associated with participation and specific activities.
