Industrial Design (BS) - Furniture Design

Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

Students will be able to develop a portfolio of Industrial Design-related work demonstrating comprehensive skills and competency.

  • Students will acquire an ability to define problems, variables and requirements; conceptualize and evaluate alternatives; test and refine solutions; and present formal portfolio documentation of results.

Students will be able to form and defend judgments about design, as well as express design ideas to the general public and to other designers.

  • Students will acquire an understanding of the history of industrial design and be able to apply that knowledge through critical discourse.
  • Students will have the ability to participate in critiques and discussions of their work and the work of others and be able to defend their opinions and analysis.
  • Students will learn to analyze works of art/design perceptively and to evaluate them critically.
  • Students will learn to communicate concepts and requirements to other designers and colleagues who work with them; to clients and employers; and to prospective clients and employers.

Students will demonstrate the ability to produce work and solve problems within an established and accepted set of parameters at a professional, entry-level competence for Industrial Design.

  • Students will develop a foundation of how products work: how products can be made to work better for people; what makes a product useful, usable, and desirable.
  • Students will develop an ability to investigate and synthesize the needs of marketing, sales, engineering, manufacturing, servicing, and ecological responsibility, and reconcile these with the needs of the end-user in terms of satisfaction, value, aesthetics, human factors, and safety.
  • Students will gain experience through internships, collaborative programs, sponsored studios, and other field experiences with industry groups.
  • Students will gain functional competence with principles of visual organization.
