Shown here are the general learning goals of the program broken down into specific student learning outcomes (SLOs). These SLOs represent what a student should be able to do as a result of successfully completing this program. Student performance on these outcomes are routinely assessed by program faculty as a way of informing programmatic improvement efforts.

Goal Outcome

Students will demonstrate the ability to synthesize and apply knowledge of music education pedagogy.

  • Students will apply analytical and historical knowledge in written and demonstrated lesson plans.
  • Students will demonstrate classroom management strategies appropriate to student teaching classrooms.
  • Students will demonstrate technological competence appropriate with K-12 classroom activities.
  • Students will identify appropriate assessment strategies.

Students will demonstrate the dispositions that reflect the attitudes, beliefs, and values for successful music instruction.

  • Students will demonstrate ethical and professional practices in music education in verbal and non-verbal communications with peers, instructors and in classroom situations.
  • Students will demonstrate lesson planning and management strategies designed to meet the needs of all learners as individuals, performing groups, and in classroom situations.
  • Students will demonstrate reflective practice in music education.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to solve pedagogical problems.

Students will demonstrate the practical skills and methodologies for successful music instruction.

  • Students will demonstrate accurate and expressive conducting skills with various types of performing groups and in general classroom situations.
  • Students will demonstrate effective performance abilities in keyboard, voice, and other instruments appropriate to the student's teaching specialization.
